Among the success stories this morning is Lukasz Maty
siak.

The 26 year-old learner, who is originally from Lodz in Poland, is celebrating exceptional results, with an A* in Maths and an A in Biology.

After making the leap of faith to come to England 4 years ago, Lukasz was determined to work hard to secure his future. So far, Leicester College has been central to this plan.

Lukasz says “When I came to England I was jumping in at the deep end. Not only was I becoming independent for the first time but it was in a new country with a different culture. Leicester College is very accessible, and it’s renowned. It is very friendly here with a good atmosphere. It’s also very diverse and I like that.”

Lukasz has combined his courses at Leicester College with a full time job in a building and engineering company, studying hard for his GCSEs in his spare time.

Next Lukasz wants to return to Leicester College to study GCSE Chemistry. Then he wants to take A’ levels. Eventually Lukasz wants to study a university degree in Biochemistry or Biotechnology.

Another GCSE success story this morning is Emma Riley.

The 22 year-old learner from Beaumont Leys is celebrating exceptional results with a suite of 6 GCSEs, all at grades C and above.

Emma says “I really want to pursue a career in nursing and I needed 6 GCSEs grades C and above to start this so I’m really pleased.”

Before she enrolled at Leicester College, Emma had a gap of 3 years where she was out of education. Emma says “Starting College after a gap of 3 years when I wasn’t really doing anything was daunting, but induction days where we did group activities really helped me get to know people. I had good support from my tutors. I never thought that I would enjoy doing GCSEs but I really did!”

Before opening her results this morning, Emma had a conditional offer from Leicester College to study the Access to Nursing and Midwifery course. The condition was that she achieved 6 GCSEs, so now she is ready to go ahead.

Emma says “This is definitely my biggest achievement so far. It’s still sinking in. I have always really wanted to be a nurse. I’m really excited!”

Daisy Van Der Post, a 17 year old learner from Willoughby Waterleys is today celebrating some of the best results at Leicester College, with 4 A* grades in Humanities, Psychology, Sociology and Science, and 2 A grades in English and Maths.

After missing year 11 at school, due to illness, Daisy enrolled at Leicester College determined to make up for lost time.

Daisy says “I heard about the course at Leicester College and it looked like a good opportunity because you can do GCSEs in a year. I missed 4 terms of school – my entire GCSE year, so I really wanted to gain my GCSEs.”

Daisy also relished the opportunity to try a couple of new subjects. She says “You had to choose 6 GCSEs and I was particularly interested in Sociology and Psychology. It was a chance to learn about society and humans, not just facts and figures, but how people behave.”

Daisy now has the grades she needs to embark on studying A’ levels. She intends to study English, Maths, Film Studies and Art and Design. Eventually she would like a career as a writer.
