How can Leicester College help your pupils achieve in Progress 8?
As you already know, pupils and schools are now judged by the Progress 8 measure at the end of year eleven. This means in practice that young people have to achieve good passes in a variety of subject areas, with the two subjects that make up the first category, English and Maths, both double-weighted.
The second category contains three EBacc qualifications such as languages, Science, and History, but the third and final category is what’s known as the “open group”. Here, pupils have the chance to complete their Progress 8 attainment with up to three further EBacc subjects or approved vocational qualifications – and this is where we come in.
Leicester College has developed a new vocational offering based on the Progress 8 criteria. Pupils who come to study with us will continue in school Monday to Thursday, and come to College every Friday to complete a vocational qualification. Each qualification we offer is known as a Progress 8 Technical Award, and can be completed in just one academic year – meaning that pupils can return in year eleven to obtain a second vocational qualification if that’s appropriate for them.
Leicester College’s Progress 8 Technical Awards are worth one GCSE and are completed over 30 weeks, with some subject areas allowing progression if the same subject is studied for a further year. The awards are available in a range of curriculum areas to suit pupils’ talents and ambitions, and delivered by our experienced teaching team. All awards can include ESOL lessons and support, if required.
The following is a complete list of our Progress 8 Technical Awards:
- Application of science
- Child development and care
- Children’s play, learning and development
- Construction and the built environment

Careers Events at Leicester College
Our recruitment team can arrange events for your school to introduce learners to Leicester College.
We can provide a guided tour for individuals and groups of our facilities and three campuses. These give learners and parents/carers an insight into life at the College; meeting with some of our current learners and asking curriculum staff questions about particular courses of interest.
Our in-depth careers talks provide targeted information on Post-16 options for schools: either on a particular subject area or as a general overview of what the College can offer.
Taster Workshops/Discovery Days
Our vocational workshops provide a colourful and ‘real life’ insight into a particular subject area. Just a few examples of some of the sessions we have previously hosted include Engineering, Sport, Childcare, Computing, Construction, Hair and Beauty and Business.
Whatever your learners’ areas of interest, we can accommodate them with a practical taster session that will help to guide them in making their next career move the right one.
Our next schools event is an NCOP sponsored event, Creative Shed. This is for year 9-13 students who are studying creative subjects at GCSE/A level (or equivalent) and are likely to choose a creative subject for further study at university or Higher Education.
