ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Courses

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

The ESOL department is responsible for teaching English language skills to young people and adults. Some people travel from EU or non-EU countries to take our courses, while other ESOL learners already live in Leicester. The courses are designed to help you improve your English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, making it easier to work, study, and live in an English-speaking environment.

Leicester College is also a registered IELTS centre. The International English Language Testing System or IELTS is an exam which is widely used for university and college admissions, immigration requirements, and business purposes.

Who are Leicester College’s ESOL courses for?

Our courses are for people who are learning English, from beginners’ to advanced level. Learners are assessed when they arrive to make sure they are in the right class for their level. Some learners are as young as 16, and there is no upper age limit. We teach part time English courses in community centres in Leicester, as well as lots of different full-time courses in the main campuses for learners who want to study further college courses, take degrees at British universities, or improve their employment prospects. Our international foundation programmes even allow you to progress automatically to a related undergraduate degree at De Montfort University, as long as you achieve a certain level of English by the end of the course.

Further Information

We can sponsor your short-term study visa (normally a requirement if you come from a non-EU country). This will allow you to study for an academic year full time in Leicester, and cannot be extended. If you go on to study for a degree afterwards at a registered university, they will be able to sponsor your Tier 4 student visa. Detailed information on our English language (ESOL and IELTS preparation programmes) for the 2017-2018 academic year is also available in leaflets in EnglishEnglish (LCFC), 中文ภาษาไทยاللغة العربيةor Tiếng Việt.
