Carpentry & Joinery

We are one of the first college’s to offer the new T level in Onsite Construction – carpentry and joinery. Find out more about T levels.

Carpentry and Joinery

Our carpentry/joinery courses are taught at levels 1, 2 and 3. This means that you can study with us whether you want to gain some basic carpentry skills or want to build on your existing knowledge and learn more advanced practical and theoretical aspects of carpentry and joinery. We teach basic skills in carpentry and joinery (such as health, safety and welfare in construction, basic hand tool skills) to constructing roofing models and complex bench joinery.

Learners often progress up through our courses before entering the workforce with their level 3 qualification. It is also possible to progress to level 4 or 5 (university level) Higher National Certificate/Diploma in building engineering services or construction.

Who are Leicester College’s carpentry and joinery courses for?

Our carpentry/joinery courses are suitable for both school leavers as well as adult learners that have some experience in the industry already. The appropriate level for you will be decided based on your prior qualifications, work experience and age. Many learners stay with us for two or more years to develop their skills to the required level for employment. If you are aged 16 to 18 and don’t yet have your English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above, these subjects will continue to be an essential part of your study programme. All courses are designed to give you the skills and knowledge needed to work as a site carpenter or bench joiner.

Further Information

Work experience will form an essential part of your course. You will be required to purchase personal protective equipment, a toolkit, technical drawing equipment and stationery. Site visits and trips to trade shows form part of the vocational enrichment of the course. All courses involve a mixture of practical and theoretical assessment. You will pass the course by demonstrating your skills both in exams as well as in your practical work.

Construction T level: Carpentry and Joinery

I chose this course as I’ve always had a passion for building and designing things. I am really enjoying this course. The flexibility is great and the amount of theory and practice is very good. After finishing this course, I am planning on getting an advanced apprenticeship with the company I am doing my work placement with. I would highly recommend T level courses as they are flexible and enjoyable.
