English and Maths

If you’re aged 16-18, are planning to study with us and haven’t got GCSE English and/or maths at grade 4 (C) you will need to retake these alongside your main subject. The exam resits aren’t unique to Leicester College. The government now requires all young people to stay in education or training until the age of 18 (apprenticeships are included), no matter where you go or what you study, you will have to continue with English and maths GCSE classes.

If you left school some time ago, it’s not too late to get your vital GCSE qualifications with us. We offer free English and maths functional skills at level 1 and 2, and GCSE classes for adults at various sites across the city. A functional skills qualification at level 2 is equivalent to a GCSE. We also have experienced teachers on hand who are used to helping learners in exactly your situation: in summer 2016, we saw 1,698 candidates through their GCSE English and maths exams, our biggest-ever cohort.

Who are Leicester College's English and maths courses for?

Anyone who doesn’t yet hold these qualifications. Government statistics say that those with 5 good GCSEs earn £80,000 more over their working lives. So whether your dream is to attend university or enter straight into the world of work once you have completed your studies with us, your English and maths GCSEs will only help you on your way.

Further Information

GCSEs are now awarded a number from 9 to 1 (9 is the highest grade) instead of A* to G grades. Leicester College accepts a grade 4 as equivalent to the old C grade.
