The popular Radio 4 cooking show The Kitchen Cabinet which is hosted by food writer Jay Rayner, was recorded at the Upper Brown Street Theatre, in front of a live local audience.

Each week the programme travels round the country, visiting interesting food locations, meeting local food-loving people and answering their culinary questions.

The panel was made up of Angela Malik, chef and tutor, who brought the influence of her love of spices into the discussions, Peter Barham, resident food scientist and Henry Dimbleby, co-founder of the fast-food restaurant chain, Leon.

As part of the production agreement, four learners from Leicester College’s Music and Sound department were given the opportunity for work –based learning during the recording.
Cameron Sword and Tobias Gibson, who are both enrolled on the Foundation Degree course in Creative Sound Technology and Jamie Perez, from the BTEC Level 3 Live Events Production and Damian Burman, from the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Production Arts assisted the BBC outside broadcast team.

The learners helped with the set-up, ticketing, back stage and controlling the audience microphones.

Cameron said: “It was a unique opportunity to see how a touring radio programme works and will look good on my CV. It was a great chance to network with staff as this is the line of work I’m hoping to get into after completing my studies.”

Tobias added: “Working with the sound engineers has given me a fantastic insight. It’s great experience and there has been a real buzz in being involved with the recording. It’s all been really good experience for me.”

Darby Dorras, producer of the show said: “We’re really happy with the venue. Everyone here has been welcoming and I would like to thank the learners for assisting with the production.

It’s nice to be able to end the series at Leicester College and we love the ambience of the Upper Brown Street and we hope we can return for another programme in the future.”
