Walker and Sons hosted a grand-opening of their new shop in Cheapside on Friday 27 September 2013.

The new shop  officially opened at 10am, but learners from the BTEC Level 3 Musical Theatre course at Leicester College, were invited by staff at Walkers to perform a musical flashmob to celebrate the opening.

The singing began at the Clocktower, with the learners then making their way to the outside of the shop, attracting crowds on the way.

Keeping in line with the nature of the shop, the learners performed the songs, ‘Lean on Me’ and ‘Food, Glorious Food’, in a musical theatre and physical theatre high energy and robust style, with elements of street theatre.

The group have been rehearsing for two weeks and the aim of the musical performance was to highlight local produce that will be used in the new shop.

The learners have also decided to donate their £200 fee to the Rainbows Hospice. On Wednesday November 13, the learners involved in the project will personally visit the hospice to hand-deliver deliver their donation.

Eddie Burton, Lecturer in Musical Theatre at Leicester College, said: “I’m thrilled to be helping a local business open its new shop in Leicester City centre by providing a Flash Mob. This will create a terrific atmosphere, bring attention to the opening and offer a valuable and fun experience for all the Level 3 Musical Theatre learners.”

Dan Pilling, Senior Interior Designer, Pick Everard Architects, who is the design consultant for the new Walker and Son Pie shop, said: “We called on our friends at Leicester College to contribute to this combined ‘All-Leicester’ effort.

“Walker and Son are clearly excited to be back in the city centre, and through using the creative talents of Leicester College’s learners, they hope to convey this to the people of city as a whole.”

Leicester College has close connections with the new pie shop. Another reason to sing about is that three apprentices from the Intermediate Apprenticeship course in Food Manufacturing have also been employed by Walker and Son, to work in the same shop.

Jaime- Lee Gourley, Sara Feighari and Vaneesa Loomes are all set to start their new roles on Friday.
