Staff and learners help collect toys for Syrian children

A member of staff at Leicester College has launched a toy collection for Syrian children affected by the ongoing conflict in Syria.

Sharen Ravat, Leicester College’s Multi Faith Chaplaincy Co-ordinator said she was so moved by images on the news of children from war-torn Syria that she wanted to help them in a practical way.

Through her contacts in the different faith communities, Sharen launched a toy appeal. She hopes this will encourage not just staff and learners but members of the public to donate toys.

“Sharen explained: “I decided to organise the campaign after being touched by the plight of children in Syria, many of whom have lost their loved ones, been injured, made homeless or just lost hope.

“I am hoping that by offering toys to children, it puts a smile on their faces.”

Sharen added: “I’m privileged to work with different faith communities at Leicester College.”

“At the College we focus on citizenship with our learners. Through this, we work very closely with other faith groups based in Leicestershire and this appeal demonstrates just that.

“The responses I’ve had from my some of my learners have been fantastic. They’ve been approaching me to help volunteer on the day and so many are offering to help, it’s great to see.

“Leicester Cathedral, the Federation of Muslim Organisations, many Mosques, Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara, the Leicester Progressive Jewish Congregation, Shree Sanatan Mandir and St Philip’s Centre are among many other organisations who are helping with the appeal.”

The charity, Hand in Hand for Syria will distribute the toys directly to hospitals and refugee camps in Syria.

Sharen said:  “I’ve had amazing responses. A lady rang me to say her children wanted to donate their new Eid presents. Another man from Slough said he had a car filled with toys that he wanted to drop off. It has been fantastic. People are kindly donating not just used toys but new toys too.”

The drop off session will take place on Sunday 4 August 2013 from 1-5pm at St Philips Church, Evington Road, Leicester LE2 1HN (opposite Masjid Umar).
