The event is about raising awareness in the difference behavioural change can make on the environment, with particular focus on reducing gas and electricity consumption.

Green Day at Leicester College is about rethinking the ways in which we use energy and a chance for both learners and staff members to participate in green initiatives and engage with local organisations who are committed to improving sustainability.

It is organised by the Sustainability Forum at the College and aims to draw attention to the Green Agenda and the College’s support of it.

It takes place on Wednesday 14 May 2014 and a range of activities are planned. Among those include:

Energy Road Show – Representatives from energy providers Southern Electric, EON, British Gas and Severn Trent will be advising on how to conserve energy consumption and give out free eco-gifts and prizes.

Electric cars – A hybrid car will be on display and a presentation for staff and learners to learn about hybrid technology.

Commuting pledging – Staff will be encouraged to pledge how many days they will travel to work by public transport, walking or cycling for the month of June 2014.

Leicester College bake-off – A fair trade baking competition for learners with prizes for the top three recipes.

The Big Switch off – Staff and learners at the College will be asked to pledge their commitment to reducing energy consumption at the College and their submissions will be entered into a free prize draw of £200 worth of vouchers for use in a bike or walking shop.

The environmental campaign aims to ensure Leicester College is driven by a number of socially responsible companies that educate and raise public awareness.

Jim Bowditch, Head of Accommodation Strategy and Management at Leicester College, said: “The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the amount of carbon emissions being generated through the running of the College and to encourage staff and learners to reduce energy consumptions and carbon emissions wherever possible.”
