Simran Kaur, who is enrolled on Art and Design Foundation Studies Level 3 Programme and Sam Reeder, who is studying towards his BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Uniform Public Service were invited to County Hall and took part in raising the Commonwealth flag.

They had previously taken part in the Catalyst Leadership Programme, which is run in partnership with Leicester College’s Multi-faith Chaplaincy Service and St Phillips’s Centre.

Simran and Sam were joined by children from a local school at Leicester County Council’s ceremony at County Hall on Monday 10 March 2014.

Rosita Page, Chairman of the County Council and Lord Lieutenant Lady Gretton led the proceedings, starting with the reading of a Commonwealth affirmation before the raising of the flag.

Simran said: “I’m very honoured to be here as I’ve never been to an event like this. The catalyst course itself was really interesting and I am glad I took part.”

Sam said: “It’s really great to be here and be a part of this ceremony. It’s a real honour to represent Leicester College today.”

Sam and Simran were accompanied by Leicester College Governor, Riaz Ravat MBE, who is also Deputy Director at St Phillip’s Centre, in Evington.

Riaz said: “Both learners contributed superbly to the Catalyst Programme and expressed a wider interest in work to build stronger community links. As a result they were invited to play an important role to mark Leicestershire’s Commonwealth Day celebrations by helping to hoist the Commonwealth flag in front of civic dignitaries at County Hall.

“As a Governor at Leicester College I was delighted that our learners proudly represented the College at such a significant event which brings together people from so many different parts of the world”.
