The project is an exciting partnership between Leicester College and the St Philips Centre in Leicester and aims to enrich learners with the knowledge and expertise they need to equip them to live and work confidently and successfully in diverse settings.

The project began after Leicester College and St Philips Centre jointly won a funding bid from the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education(NIACE) and the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) to support the implementation of the “All for One and One for All Project”.

The Project is managed by Julie Sharma from the Learner Engagement and Enrichment Team at Leicester College and is delivered by Sharen Ravat, the Multi Faith Chaplaincy Coordinator at the College and Riaz Ravat BEM, Deputy Director at the St Philips Centre.

To- date around 50 learners from the Construction department and around 30 learners from the Catering department have taken part in faith tutorials, delivered both at the College and also at the St Philips Centre.

As part of this project, some of the learners took part in a practical cooking session at the Chef and Spice Restaurant on Hinckley Road, on Tuesday 18 March 2014, where they learnt about how Asian cuisine is prepared and served.

They were also able to quiz the chefs on the cultural differences between world cuisines and had the chance to observe and see how the food is prepared.

Jordan Rippon, who’s enrolled on the Introduction to Professional Cookery Diploma at Leicester College, said: “This visit has been very useful. I didn’t really know what halal food is or how Indian food was cooked. This visit has been really useful to me and it’s really opened up my eyes culturally I’ve been able to ask questions I had never asked before.”

Sharen Ravat said: “The learners were curious about the food, the business but also the cultural work ethic. They were very respectful and polite and two of them would like to work there! It was a very successful trip for our learners.”

Future trips to the Golden Mile in Leicester, the Holocaust Memorial Centre in Newark on Trent and the National Arboretum in Staffordshire are also planned.
