Course Overview

The course is run from City Skills Centre, each Monday 9:45am to 12:15pm for 9 weeks. A traditional craft with a modern twist – it’s not just granny squares and blankets

This relaxed and friendly 9-week course is suitable for all abilities from complete beginners to the more experienced. Whether you have never picked up a hook before or if you want to learn new crochet skills, this is the course for you.

You will work on your own project and at your own pace. With the support of an experienced tutor, you will learn to use basic stitches to create a range of items including homewares, soft toys and clothing. By the end of the course, you will understand how different yarns, colours and stitches combine to create a wide range of patterns and textures.

Other crochet techniques include:

– Tunisian crochet
– Mosaic crochet
– Amigurumi
– Filet crochet

What You'll Learn

Year 1

You will learn how to hold your hook and yarn as well as your work as it is created. You will learn how to cast on, make a chain stitch, slip-stitch, double crochet and treble, and how to increase stitches and make clusters.

You will also learn the shorthand abbreviations for all the stitches and processes to enable you to read a standard pattern. You will be taught how to recognise the stitches and their parts as well as how to count stitches in a piece of work.

Finally, you will be shown how to join blocks and add a border to create a beautiful, original and useful item. In addition, this course will also help you with your interpersonal skills such as communication with others and boost your confidence.

Entry Requirements

You must be aged 19+ and be able to complete a short workbook on a weekly basis with the help of your tutor.

How you will be assessed

At the start of the course, you will decide with your tutor your personal targets for the course. Your targets will be unique to you. If you have met your targets by the end of the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance.

Tuition Fees (19+): £90.00

Additional Costs

The cost of the course is £90.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of

– Universal Credit
– JSA/ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work-Related Action Group)

There will also be no fees if you earn less than £20,319.

Course and Career progression

Upon completion, you can progress onto the Garment Making or Embroidery course. To find out more, please speak to your tutor about the options available towards the end of your course, as well as our Careers Advisors at the College, who can help and guide you with your next steps.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to come into College if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.
