T Level Onsite Construction – Carpentry and Joinery Specialism – C7262

Combining the experience of career carpenters and joiners with knowledge and theory delivered by expert tutors, the T level in carpentry and joinery weaves the ancient art of woodworking into your future.

Designed for an industry in need of fresh carpenters and joiners, every classroom lesson and workshop session prepares you to hold your own in the construction industry. You get a preview of how the industry works before exploring the principles of design and the role of technology and sustainability in guiding your career.

For 80% of the course, you and your classmates fill your toolboxes with key woodworking theories and transferable skills. You will trial your new skills in purpose-built workshops, perfecting your toolwork, and timber knowledge, and learning to hang a door, fit a lock, cut basic joints, and fit architraves and skirtings.

When you graduate, you can walk with confidence onto any construction site or level up your learning on a higher apprenticeship or a degree.

If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled in a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above.

You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.

Year 1

Year 1 walks you through the carpentry workshop, introducing you to the woodworking basics and meeting the tools of your trade. You also build transferable skills and knowledge that set you up for success on any construction site.

Working through the course topics and discovering the foundations of the trade together you will build strong relationships with classmates, so you all support each other on your journey.

Year 2

Year 2 is when the carpentry and joinery really kicks in. In workshop sessions, you get to grips with

1. Preparing to produce complex timber-based building products and structures
2. Producing complex timber-based components
3. Assembling complex timber-based products
4. Installing complex timber-based products into complex structures

On your 45-day industry placement, you tackle an employer-set project to give you hands-on experience in a real-life setting. This is your moment to put all that year-one theory into practice while you also develop skills that serve you for the rest of your career: communication, teamwork and problem-solving.

If you need an extra hand with English, maths and digital skills to finish your construction T level, our tutors work with you to get that all-important level 2 in English and maths. With those sorted, you can complete the course and head into your career, head held high.

T levels are for people who are aged 16 on 31 August on the date that they start the course.

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you demonstrate a minimum of 90% attendance at your last place of work or study. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 or above or Functional Skills in both English and Maths at level 2, plus two other GCSEs at grade 4 or above including science and a design technology-based related subject.

If you don’t meet these requirements but want to start on your chosen career path we have alternative programmes at lower levels.

During the first weeks, you will be assessed to make that the programme is correct for you and that you will be able to succeed. We will talk to you if there are any problems during these first 6 weeks.

There are several formal assessments during the two years: external exams, controlled assessments, practical summary assignments, and an employer-led set project. 

Together, the assessments generate an overall grade of pass, merit, distinction, or distinction*.

At the end of your T level, you receive a nationally recognized certificate with a clear breakdown of your achievements. The T level can be worth up to 168 UCAS points.

Additional Costs

For construction T-level courses the material fee is £300* for the two years, and this is payable at enrolment. You will also need to buy PPE (personal protective equipment) to make sure that you are safe while working and studying (approximately £35*), as well as toolkits to use in our workshops and on your industry placement (approximately £50*).

Basic stationery items such as pens, pencils, ring binders, and writing paper and a Copy of the Onsite Guide will also be required.

With your T Level in Construction: Onsite Construction Carpentry and Joinery Specialism, you are set for one of the most mindful careers in construction. Your knowledge of wood, cuts, tools, and tricks of the trade moves with you into your career or – if you prefer – into an apprenticeship/higher-level apprenticeship or degree.

You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to an interview at the College to meet key staff, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
