Year 1

You will develop an understanding of a broad range of core skills relevant to the sector, including:

– learning about the business environment
– finding out more about the careers within the legal profession
– understanding regulation
– key skills related to professionalism and ethics
– understanding security and risk
– understanding equality, diversity and inclusion requirements
– learning about third party professional services
– learning about the fundamentals of law and financial accounting
– develop an awareness of digital and emerging technology, digital transformation and digital tools
– learn about data driven innovation, analytics and design thinking
– develop research skills
– learn about project and change management approaches in legal contexts

Year 2

In the second year, your study will focus on the specialist content. Occupational specialisms ensure you develop the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve a level of competence needed to enter employment in the occupational specialism, and are organised around ‘performance outcomes’ that indicate
what you will be able to do, as a result of learning and applying the specified knowledge and skills.

The performance outcomes on the Legal Services Assistant Crime, Criminal Justice and Social Welfare pathway are:
– assist with the inception, progression and completion of legal services in crime, criminal justice and
social welfare
– carry out legal and factual research and present findings both orally and in writing in crime, criminal
justice and social welfare
– draft legal documents and standard legal communications in crime, criminal justice and social
welfare, for review by a supervisor

You need to be between 16 and 18 on 31 August of the year you start the course.
You should have 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including Maths and English. We can accept alternative equivalent qualifications, too.

Additionally, this course requires one reference (usually from your school) and it is desirable that you can demonstrate a minimum of 90% attendance at your last place of study.

You will be assessed via a variety of formal methods during your course plus assessments such as external exams, controlled assessments, an employer-led set project, and summarising your learning through practical assignments. 

This will generate an overall grade of pass, merit, distinction, or distinction*. You will be awarded a nationally recognised certificate which will show a breakdown of what you have achieved and can be worth up to 168 UCAS points.

Additional Costs

There are no tuition fees to study a T level if you start before you are 19 years old but there will be material costs that will need to be paid at the start of the course.

Achieving this technical qualification will provide several progression options. These include:
– skilled employment – legal services roles such as business assistant in a legal services function, or an EO caseworker.
– apprenticeship in paralegal or Level 4 Conveyancing Technician
– higher level study: Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ)
– degree related programmes such as Law, Criminology or Business Studies

You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a welcome event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
