Course Overview

This is a six-week programme for anyone (19+) who is interested in working for the Leicester City Council as a Neighbourhood Improvement Operative on a 30 hour, 6 months fixed term contract. The job role includes physical work in all weathers improving public areas in Leicester and are linked to Leicester City Council Housing Department. The programme includes a wide range of opportunities where you can achieve nationally-recognised qualifications including Health Safety, Equality Diversity to support your future career.

All students completing this programme will be offered an interview following a short period of work experience. The ten successful applicants will be given the opportunity to gain CSCS cards. Following the completion of the 6-month fixed term role, there is potential to apply for a 12-month contract with Leicester City Council.

This is an amazing opportunity for anyone with or without experience in the building sector, and an excellent pathway towards gaining permanent (6 months) employment. This programme is only available from Leicester College and applicants must apply via Job Centre recommendation. Applications from all genders are welcome. You must be committed to complete the whole 6 weeks, Monday – Friday (9 am – 4 pm).

What You'll Learn

Year 1

During this programme, you will take part in a variety of different learning activities including supported online learning, classroom teaching, discussion, research including watching short clips and practical demonstrations where you will be able to achieve a range of qualifications e.g.:
Classroom-based:
1. Customer Service Award level 1 and level 2
2. Conflict Resolution Award level 1
3. Team Motivation Award entry 3
4. Public Services Award level 1
5. Workskills EDEXCEL Certificate level 1 (including interview skills, CV writing etc.)

Online learning:
6. Employment Rights and Responsibilities Award level 1
7. Careers in Construction Award level 1
8. Health and Safety for the Workplace Award level 2
9. Equality and Diversity Award level 1
10. Commercial Awareness Award level 1

Computer Skills:
11. Internet safety Award level 1
12. IT Award level 1

CSCS card:
1. Successful students who complete the full programme and gain employment with the Leicester City Council will get the opportunity to achieve the CSCS card.

This is only an example of a few of the qualifications you will gain, you will be offered many other qualifications depending on your interest, learning ability and career needs.

Entry Requirements

You must have an English qualification at entry level 3 or above. If you have any concerns regarding your literacy level, please call us for an informal chat.

How you will be assessed

When attending classroom-based sessions, you will complete a variety of short practical and written tasks that will be formally assessed by your tutor to create a portfolio of written evidence. When completing online qualifications, you will complete short mock tests following completion of the learning for each unit and when you are confident, you will then complete the multiple-choice online exam.

You will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in the following categories:
In receipt of one of the following benefits: Universal Credit, JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work-Related Action Group) or low waged. Evidence of benefits will be required on the application.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements of the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course.
