Course Overview

This one year course is for adults aged 19+ wishing to gain some understanding and practical experience of the variety of trades in the construction industry. The qualification covers a range of hand skills and practical tasks and is suited to individuals who are interested in starting property maintenance and or DIY enthusiasts. The course is highly practical in content with the majority of delivery taking place in bespoke workshop facilities. The following trade areas are covered: carpentry and joinery, plastering, brickwork, and painting and decorating. Final unit selection will be agreed upon with you before enrolment. There is a degree of flexibility in the subjects covered. You will need to undertake some distance learning from home or use the College’s library facilities for further study. Advice, guidance, and support will be given.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

The course will cover a mandatory unit, Introduction to Health and Safety in Construction, plus subject-specific units in the respective trade areas. Typical examples include: constructing housing/halving joints; fitting locks and latches; fixing architraves and skirting; painting techniques and painting and wallpapering; and preparing background surfaces and applying finish coats. The final selection of units will be confirmed.

Entry Requirements

This qualification is for adults (19 plus).There are no formal entry requirements. Basic maths such as measuring and marking out plus calculating quantities will be required. Candidates will need to compile a portfolio of evidence. A basic understanding of hand tools and practical tasks would be useful. Emphasis will be on undertaking practical tasks to build confidence before completing formal assessment.

How you will be assessed

Assessment is through practical assignments. There is an end-of-unit knowledge test to complete.

Additional Costs

Students will need to provide their own safety footwear and protective clothing. Basic stationery is also required for note taking etc. There may be an additional examination registration fee of approximately £100.00 if applicable. Re-sits for applicable examinations are chargeable.

Course and Career progression

Successful students can progress onto a level 2 qualification in their chosen trade area such as carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating, or plastering to develop their skills and knowledge further. Alternatively, you may wish to enter employment in your chosen field or return to College via an apprenticeship scheme.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in for a welcome event prior to enrol for your chosen course of study.
