Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician Apprenticeship – P0214

Engineering technicians in the aerospace, aviation, automotive, maritime defence and wider advanced manufacturing and engineering sector are predominantly involved in highly skilled, complex work.

Some of the expectations and competencies include:

1. Applying safe systems of working
2. Making technical contributions to either the design, development, quality assurance, manufacture, installation, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, systems, processes or services.
3. Applying proven techniques and procedures to solve engineering/manufacturing problems.
4. Demonstrating effective interpersonal skills in communicating both technical and non-technical information.
5. Continued professional development.

You will take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of your work, within the limits of your personal authority. You will also need to demonstrate a core set of behaviours in order to be competent in your job role and complement wider business strategy and development. This will help to support your long-term career development.

An apprenticeship is a job with training. You will be employed at least 30 hours a week, with 80% of your working hours in your day-to-day role, and the remaining 20% of your time engaged in training or study.

Year 1

In year one you will learn a range of skills, including:

1. Obtaining, checking and using the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, and quality control documentation)
2. Working safely at all times, complying with health, safety and environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements
3. Planning and obtaining all the resources required to undertake the work.
4. Using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
5. Carrying out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing).
6. Dealing promptly and effectively with engineering/manufacturing problems using approved diagnostic methods and techniques.
7. Completing any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work.
8. Restoring the work area on completion of the activity and returning resources and consumables to the appropriate location.

Year 2

In year 2, you will build on your foundational knowledge from the first year across the following areas:

1. Producing technical documentation containing all the necessary data for the work.
2. Presenting technical documentation in the required format.
3. Ensuring codes, symbols and other references used in the technical documentation follow agreed UK/International conventions.
4. Saving and storing technical documentation in the correct format and location in accordance with organisational and/or customer requirements.
5. Making amendments to technical documentation using the agreed quality assurance control procedures.
6. Developing effective business and/or customer relationships.
7. Providing technical advice and guidance to others to help improve working practices, processes and/or procedures.

Completed a level 2 diploma or Level 2 in maths and English.

Individual employers will set the recruitment and selection criteria for their apprenticeships. In order to optimise success, you should typically have 4 GCSEs at Grade C/4 or equivalent, including mathematics, English and science.

All of the qualification requirements in the foundation and development phases are mandatory outcomes for the completion and final certification of the Apprenticeship Standard. Each qualification has a core and options approach and employers will select the most applicable pathway and unit options to meet their organisational requirements.

There will be an endpoint assessment during the final phase of the Apprenticeship where you will need to demonstrate to the employer how they have achieved full occupational competence against, the skills, knowledge, and behaviours, set out in the Standard. On successful completion of the End Point Assessment (EPA) and employer endorsement phase (final sign-off), you will then be put forward to be awarded your Apprenticeship completion certificate.

Completion of the Apprenticeship is recognised by relevant professional engineering Institutions at the appropriate level of professional registration (EngTech). In the case of the Military specific pathway in the Aircraft Maintenance Fitter/Technician Standard, professional competence will be recognised by the Military Independent Assessment Authority (MIAA).
This will allow you to progress on to management courses such as a Higher National Certificate or Higher National Diploma level or to enter full-time employment in your chosen specialism.
