Engineering Technician Advanced Apprenticeship – P0213

Learning about electrical, mechanical and control instrumentation is vital to the engineering sector. With the support of this apprenticeship, you will learn about a variety of plant and machinery used in this industry. With the right training and study, we will help enable you to identify and maintain relevant systems for a wide type and use of electrical/mechanical/control and instrumentation in plant and equipment.

An apprenticeship is a job with training. You will be employed at least 30 hours a week, with 80% of your working hours in your day-to-day role, and the remaining 20% of your time engaged in training or study.

Year 1

As part of your studies and on the job training you will learn all the processes of undertaking installation, testing, servicing, removal, replacement, maintenance, and repair of sometimes complex equipment, as part of planned preventative and regular maintenance programmes.

As a technician, you will need to apply a range of skills and knowledge to support the business and operational requirements of modern integrated engineering production plant and services, electrical systems, and processes. You may also undertake decommissioning activities when the plant is being removed from service.

Year 2

You will be responsible for the quality of your own work, and possibly others, ensuring the work is completed safely and meets quality controls, time and budget requirements, whilst maintaining the efficient running of plant and equipment.

As a technician you will develop the skills to understand:
1) first principles relating to the operation and maintenance of appropriate plant and equipment.
2) relevant industry health and safety standards, regulations, and environmental and regulatory requirements.
3) maintenance and operational practices, processes, and procedures covering a range of plant and equipment.
4) the relevant engineering theories and principles relative to your occupation.

Entry to this course requires GCSE maths grades 9 to 4, a GCSE in English is desirable. You will also require an engineering diploma at level 2.

Employers must satisfy themselves that apprentices are ready for their end point assessment. Apprentices must demonstrate that they meet the following criteria:
1) achieved a minimum level 2 English and maths
2) satisfactory completion of the formal training plan agreed with the apprentice by the employer
3) sufficient evidence in the form of a portfolio to allow the apprentice to consistently demonstrate knowledge, skills and behaviours as described in the standard.

After successful completion of the advanced apprenticeship, you could potentially work in the engineering industry in roles such as team leader or at a supervisory level. Alternatively, you may wish to continue your studies with a higher education course at level 6 which is equivalent to a degree, this will open up more opportunities for work at a management level.
