What will the apprentice be doing?
A varied and interesting engineering job awaits the successful candidate.
Duties Include:
- fault finding, service work, installation and commissioning of a range of Woodworking machinery
- position, assemble, install and dismantle plant and equipment which may include instrumentation and control of temperature, pressure and flow systems to agree specifications
- replace, repair or remove components within integrated plant and equipment and ensure its return to operational condition.
- comply with industry health, safety and environmental working practices and regulations.
- communicate with and provide information to stakeholders in line with personal role and responsibilities.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
You will complete an advanced level 3 apprenticeship standard.
You will attend training at Leicester College Abbey Park Campus, one day per week.
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
After completion of apprenticeship, you can gain a full time position at the compnay and progress on to a HNC in engineering.

This apprenticeship has been designed to develop the understanding and experience of the apprentice who will then train to become an operator/setter/ programmer of CNC Milling/Turning Machines and to produce a range of components to customer specifications.
What you will do in your working day
- Understanding Engineering Drawings and basic manufacturing techniques.
- Work as a Team on a project set by the HR & Technical Trainers.
- Departmental Placements within Nylacast, which will give apprentices a good understanding of Health, Safety and Environmental issues that arise whilst working within Quality, Inspection and Machine shops.
The training you will be getting
- City and Guilds Machining technician Level 3 Advanced apprenticeship.
- This course will be delivered as a day release.
- Awareness of engineering standards and regulations: British Standards (BS); International Organisation for Standardisation standards (ISO); European Norm (EN); Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship
The apprentice can advance from an operator role to become a machine setter and finally a CNC machine programmer. Successful completion of the apprenticeship modules may result in the offer of a full-time position as a CNC engineer. This is providing the apprentice works within the company rules and guidelines which will be explained during their induction.

Working in a small fabrication department reporting to fabrication supervisor, this includes attending college for off-site learning and qualifications with on the job learning as well.

Duties will include:
- Learning to complete accurate welding, fabrication, Sheet metal work, across a variety of materials and industries
- Ensuring full adherence to HS&E & Quality at all times
- Plan and prepare for the Metal fabrication activities before commencing work

What you will do in your working day
Based in one of our busy kitchens at Leicester Tigers, Welford Road, you would learn the different sections within the kitchen, gain experience with food preparation, cooking techniques and work safely within HSE guidance.
Tasks could include, but not be limited to:
- To prepare and cook menu items as directed by the Head Chef
- To assist with stock taking when required
- To assist in the development and planning of menus, including future food trends, and to be passionate about developing new styles of service and concepts in the location
- To ensure that customers are given a prompt and efficient service and expectations are consistently exceeded
- To be customer focused at all times, approachable and quick to exceed expectations in fulfilling customer needs
- To be a team player, assisting other team members when necessary
- To treat members of the team at location as you would expect to be treated
- Assist with stock, deliveries and waste management, checking and recording in line with company policies
- To gain an understanding of food costing, sales mix and menu planning
- To take responsibility for contributing towards your own development with the guidance of the Head Chef and attend training courses as identified
- To show commitment to company values in all aspects of your role
- To act as a positive ambassador for the business
- There is no supervision of other staff
The training you will be getting
- Alongside your day-to-day duties, you will complete the Commis Chef Level 2 Apprenticeship
- This is a nationally recognised qualification, and the primary objective of the Commis Chef is to learn and understand how to carry out the basic functions in every section of the kitchen
- You will either be attending college 1 day per week or you will learn ‘in-unit’
- You will be supported through this qualification by your Personal Development Coach who will visit you at your place work every 6-10 weeks
- You will also attend 6 workshops including an Introduction Day at a location outside your normal place of work. All travel expenses will be covered by your employer
- You are not expected to complete any of your Apprenticeship work outside of your normal working hours and will be given set time each week to complete your work
- Functional skills if required
