Gas Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship – P4851

This gas engineering course will involve the safe installation, commission, decommission, and the ongoing service and repair of gas appliances in either a domestic or non-domestic setting. Appliances can include but are not limited to, a range of work categories such as central heating boilers, unvented hot water storage, ducted air heaters, cookers, space heaters, meters, alternative fuel, boosters, testing, and purging for industrial pipework.

During this course, you will be expected to explain how installations and appliances work, providing energy efficiency advice, and ensuring customer service excellence at all times. Gas engineering operates strictly within the requirements of health and safety legislation. Roles in gas engineering are physical in nature and may involve lifting and moving equipment, working at heights, and working in confined spaces.

This apprenticeship will allow you to go through training whilst on the job. You will be employed at least 30 hours a week, with 80% of your working hours in your day-to-day role, and the remaining 20% of your time engaged in training or study.

Year 1

The first year of the apprenticeship will cover the science behind plumbing, heating and gas and will cover the topics below:
1. The impact of the gas industry on the environment
2. How to install all types of pipework safely to the relevant industry standard
3. How to maintain all related components to industry standards
4. How to safely carry out practical work in order to be safe within the industry
5. How to prepare the workplace/site ready for work to be carried out

Year 2

In year two and year three, you will be learning additional units for the gas engineering qualifications, including:
1. Gas Principles
2. Installation and servicing
3. Test and purge
4. Install and commissioning
5. Water heaters including the installation and design
6. Unvented
7. Combustion of gas
8. Water regulations

You must be employed in the industry. Maths and English GCSE (A-C) is desirable.

On this course, you will be assessed in a combination of ways:

1) during the induction and core skills training stage 1 you will be asked to teach safe working which includes demonstrating and carrying out health and safety practices in gas utilisation as well as building services and
structures.
2) during your knowledge training stage 2 you will be assessed at a workplace or training centre which will include written or practical assignments and knowledge assessments. These are graded against specific modules/options. You will then choose an optional pathway course.
3) during workplace training stage 3 you will be assessed by a work log of practical activities, skills, and competencies, as well as a practical observation of work activity in terms of quality and behaviour.
4) you will then undertake an End Point Assessment (EPA). This is the final stage that you will achieve to go through to complete their apprenticeship.
5) you must show your knowledge to an independent end-point assessor and the grades available are distinction, pass, or fail.
6) you will submit a portfolio with a Gas Safe registration certificate, competency test, and work log review. The portfolio shows the skills, knowledge, and behaviours for the core and specific requirements of the standard. The overall grading available is pass or distinction.

Learn more about fees

On completion of this apprenticeship, you can go straight into employment or progress your qualification further. You can also progress onto a Higher National Diploma in Building Engineering services at level 5 or a Higher National Diploma in Construction at level 5.
