Course Overview

This course is designed specifically for adults 19+. As a one year course, it provides you with high-quality preparation for progression on to either a level 4 HNC, an apprenticeship in health and social care, or onto potential employment. As the qualification is equivalent to one A Level it could also be combined with another level 3 course or A Levels already achieved for progression into Higher Education. The course is structured to incorporate skills such as teamwork and good communication combined with the experience of research, extended writing, and meeting deadlines. For this course, you are required to complete a mandatory work placement at a relevant organisation. A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be required.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

As part of your studies, you will complete four mandatory units which will be assessed with two examinations: human span and life development; working in health and social care; meeting individual care and support needs and principles of safe practice in health and social care.

There are also and two optional units including work experience in health and social care. This latter unit will be carried out in a relevant health and social care work placement where you will have the opportunity to be observed by an experienced trainer assessor who will help you to reflect upon your current work practice and build upon your wider care skills base.

Entry Requirements

It is desirable that you hold a GCSE in either English and/or maths at grade 4 (C) or above plus some relevant experience in the sector.

How you will be assessed

Assessments are completed with a mixture of coursework and examinations. There are four internally assessed course work units in individual care and support needs, work experience for Health and Social Care, principles of safe practice and physiological disorders and their care. There will also be two externally assessed exam units for human lifespan development and working in Health and Social Care.

Course and Career progression

This course provides you with a number of options for further progression. Upon successful completion and achievement of this qualification you can choose a pathway that focuses on a particular occupational area of employment such as domiciliary care; care support worker; care home advocate and more. Alternatively, you can choose to either progress on to a national apprenticeship in health and social care, or combined with level 3 qualifications already achieved apply to progress onto a higher education course.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
