On your marks, get set, bake!

Leicester College's Student Services team is putting a festive twist on fundraising this December with a Christmas Bake-off to support Cancer Research UK. The event, which takes place on Monday 16 December 2024, is set to raise both awareness and funds for the vital charity that plays a crucial role in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The Bake-off is for Leicester College staff who work in Student Services and will feature a fun baking competition, followed by a bake sale, with all proceeds going to Cancer Research UK.

The event's organiser and Careers Advisor at Leicester College, Sonia Riyait, explained: “I wanted to organise a Student Services Christmas Bake-off for Cancer Research UK at Leicester College to raise awareness and fundraise for this vital charity who does so much to support those affected by cancer, and which carries out life-saving research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. It had to be a fun experience though, and most people love cake, so I thought that a Student Services Bake-off followed by a bake sale would be the perfect opportunity to combine it all in one festive event!

“The people affected by cancer were at the forefront of my mind when organising the event. Being given a diagnosis of cancer can be one of the most devastating pieces of news we can receive, whether it affects us directly or the people we love and care about. It’s the uninvited guest who doesn’t discriminate. So, it’s incredibly important to me to shed light on spotting the signs and symptoms of cancer early because doing so can result in treatment being more successful. My advice to anyone reading this is that if you notice anything unusual for you, please don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and book an appointment to speak to a GP. It might save your life,” continued Sonia.

The Bake-off, which promises to be a lively and delicious occasion, is expected to attract staff from across the college’s Student Services department, all eager to contribute to the cause while showcasing their baking talents. With cake on the menu and a great cause at heart, the event is sure to be a sweet success.

If the thought of the Bake-off has whetted your appetite for baking, Leicester College offers a range of patisserie and confectionery courses. You can find more details here.
