Leicester College has been working in partnership with Stokes Wood Primary School in Leicester, providing sport students with the opportunity to deliver PE sessions to Year 5 and Year 6 pupils.

In addition to curriculum sessions, students have also delivered extra-curricular sports activities at the primary school, further enhancing their coaching experience and engagement with young participants.

To recognise the success of the extra-curricular programme, pupils who took part were invited to an end-of-term celebration event at the Mattioli Arena, where they were presented with awards for their commitment and progression throughout the term.

A positive experience for pupils and students

One student shared that they “gained so much experience and enjoyed delivering sessions to students with additional needs,” while another said, “this experience has inspired me to become a primary school PE teacher.”

Megan Williams, Deputy Headteacher at Stokes Wood Primary School said: “Working in partnership with Leicester College has been a very positive experience for our pupils, building their confidence, teamwork and engagement in sport while developing their physical skills.

“Opportunities such as visiting the Mattioli Arena have given many of our children experiences that they would not normally access; these have been particularly impactful in broadening their aspirations, inspiring them and making sporting opportunities memorable.”

Kate Leslie, Programme Area Manager for Sport at Leicester College added: “The impact on our students has been exceptional. Several Level 2 students were so inspired by their experience that they volunteered to return and deliver additional coaching sessions.

“Our sport courses continue to empower learners to grow in confidence, develop high-quality coaching skills, and explore exciting career pathways within sport and education.”

Succeeding in the sports sector

Leicester College’s progressive coaching pathway ensures that every learner develops practical, industry-relevant skills. Level 1 students gain valuable insight by supporting Level 3 students as assistant coaches, while Level 2 students step up as head coaches, taking full responsibility for planning and delivering their own sessions. Level 3 students further refine their expertise by leading sessions over an extended three-week period.

This hands-on experience is embedded across all levels of the College’s sport courses, enabling students to plan and lead sessions in a real school environment.

This structured approach creates an authentic coaching environment, building confidence, professionalism and the practical skills needed to succeed in the sports industry.
