Leicester College is expanding its Launch Pad (Foundation Learning) programme, with additional places available from September 2026 to support the growing number of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) across Leicester and Leicestershire.

The number of NEETs in Leicester increased to 700 in Leicester in 2025 and over 900 in Leicestershire.

Launch Pad is Leicester College's foundation learning programme for young people aged 16-19 who do not yet have the qualifications needed to start a vocational course. It provides a fresh start, helping students build confidence, improve their English and maths, develop employability skills and explore different career pathways before progressing onto further study, apprenticeships or employment.

As part of the expansion, students will have the opportunity to explore a wider range of subject areas. From September, every curriculum area at the College will offer Launch Pad learners the chance to gain insight into their chosen field, with some areas also offering the opportunity to achieve a Level 1 qualification.

Darrell Gumpo is a Leicester College student progressing from a Level 2 in IT to a Level 3, after discovering the subject through Launch Pad. Darrell said: “When I first applied to Leicester College, I wanted to study accounting but didn't have the GCSEs needed for the course.

“The Launch Pad programme gave me another opportunity and helped me to build my confidence and develop new skills. Through subjects such as creative industries, employability, maths and English, I improved my teamwork, critical thinking and communication skills.

“The programme also gave me the chance to explore different career options and visit places like DMU, which helped me think more about my future. Launch Pad has helped shape me into a better person and provided a clear pathway for my next steps. After progressing onto further study, I'm now moving forward with my career goals and would encourage other young people to take advantage of the opportunities it offers.”

Shabir Ismail, Principal and CEO at Leicester College commented: "We know that a traditional, linear route through education is not the right fit for every young person. Launch Pad provides a flexible and supportive pathway that helps students to build confidence, develop new skills and explore future career options.

"By expanding the programme, we can support more young people across Leicester and Leicestershire to re-engage with education, discover their potential and progress onto further study, training or employment."
