This one-year Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering builds on Level 4 study to develop advanced knowledge and specialist technical skills required for higher-level roles in the engineering sector.
The course focuses on the application of electrical and electronic engineering in real-world contexts, with an emphasis on modern technologies such as embedded systems, industrial power systems and advanced control.
Throughout the course, you will apply your learning through project-based work and practical activities, ensuring you develop the skills needed for real engineering environments. This prepares you for progression into senior technical roles or further study.
Designed in line with industry expectations, the HND prepares you for progression into employment or further study. On completion, you may progress to a top-up degree or move into roles within sectors such as automation, manufacturing, energy and systems engineering.
During this programme, you will deepen your understanding of electrical and electronic engineering through advanced and specialist study.
You will explore areas such as embedded systems, electrical power utilisation and industrial electronics, developing a strong understanding of how complex systems operate within modern engineering environments. Further study in electrical machines, digital systems and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) will enhance your technical capability.
You will also develop higher-level analytical and problem-solving skills through engineering mathematics and professional engineering management, preparing you for leadership and technical roles.
Learning is supported through applied project work and industry-relevant activities, enabling you to demonstrate your knowledge in practical contexts. By the end of the course, you will be well prepared for progression to a degree or employment in advanced engineering roles.
Standard entry to this course requires successful completion of a Level 4 qualification in a related subject area, such as a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Engineering.
You are expected to hold GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade 4 (C) or above, or an equivalent qualification.
All applicants could be invited to attend an interview to assess suitability and prior achievement.
- Annual Tuition fee: £6525
For certain practical activities, you may be required to provide your own personal protective equipment (PPE).
This course supports progression into higher-level employment and further study within the engineering sector.
On successful completion of the Higher National Diploma (Level 5), you may progress to a top-up degree (final year of a university programme) or other higher-level qualifications.
Alternatively, you may choose to enter or progress within employment. The advanced knowledge and skills developed on this course are valued across a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, energy, aerospace, automotive and automation.
Typical roles include design engineer, manufacturing engineer, project engineer or more senior technical positions within engineering organisations.
The course is designed to prepare you for long-term career progression by developing both your technical expertise and professional skills.
