This is a one-year full-time programme, culminates in the award of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in engineering. With a career in engineering as your chosen route, this level 5 course offers students wishing to follow a aeronautical engineering pathway, both the higher level knowledge and also the understanding of how this is applied in industry.
The HND in engineering course is designed to enable students who may have come through a vocational route to progress into higher education, building on the knowledge gained at level 4.
On successful completion of the HND, you will be eligible to enrol on the Top Up Degree (Final year of university) courses in the respective skill set.
Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQ) at levels 4 and 5 are an alternative to apprenticeships or degrees. They may suit you if you want an employer-led study programme, approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education. HTQ will also focus on the knowledge and skills required by industry.
Over the course of this one year programme, you will study the following units:
- Professional engineering management (Note: This is a Pearson-set unit)
- Further mathematics
- Aircraft flight control systems
- Aircraft propulsion principles and technology
- Aircraft structural integrity
- Avionic systems
- Aircraft gas turbine engine design and performance
- Advanced turbine rotary wing
- Aircraft mechanical and flight systems
A project or suitable industry trips may also be undertaken to develop industry based knowledge and skills.
Standard entry requirements for this course include successful completion of a Level 4 qualification in Aeronautical Engineering. In addition, you are expected to hold GCSE English and Mathematics at grade 4 (or equivalent). An interview may be required to ascertain prior achievement.
- Annual Tuition fee: £6525
On successful completion of the HND you will be able to apply to study for a further year to obtain a full degree at university. This qualification is well regarded throughout the industry and the academic world. Career opportunities include managerial and technical positions in mechanical or aeronautical engineering sectors.
Applications to University course to top up the degree must be made through UCAS using relevant institution code. For most of our learners employment is the next step of their journey.
