This non-accredited course is delivered at St Margaret's Campus and takes place each Wednesday from 6:00pm to 8:30pm for 13 weeks, starting on 16 September and finishing on 16 December 2026.
This course is for anyone interested in developing skills in customising, altering and repurposing garments.
Each week, you will be introduced to a range of garment alteration techniques and guided through practical activities to develop your skills and confidence.
Towards the end of the course, you will complete an individual project to apply the techniques and skills you have learned.
This is a tutor-led course.
During this course, you will learn:
- Health and safety, safe working practice regulations
- Add darts to garments
- Shorten trousers, tops skirts
- Add pleats to garments
- Add elastic casings to waistbands and tops
- Replace zips and other garment fastenings to garments
- Add a godet (panel) to garments
- Adjust necklines on tops
- Customise garments to achieve a better tailor fit
- Repurpose garments
This course is designed as an introduction to tailoring and alterations. It is suitable for learners who already have some sewing skills and knowledge.

You should be able to use scissors and sewing equipment safely and work independently throughout the course.
You must be aged 19 or over and be able to complete a short workbook each week with support from your tutor.
- Annual Tuition fee: £130
The cost of the course is £130.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- Job Seekers Allowance (JSA)
- Employment Support Allowance (ESA - Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if your annual income is less than £26,800.
You can only complete this course once.
On completion of this course, you may progress onto our Garment Making Improvers 1 course.
Your tutor will discuss the various progression routes available to you and provide advice on your next steps. You can also access support from the College Careers Team to help with your progression.
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course's entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
