This non-accredited course runs from St Margaret's Campus, each Wednesday, 5:30pm - 8:00pm for 8 weeks starting on 10 September and finishing on 5 November 2025.
This is a tutor led beginner's course. You will create a portfolio of samples using the basic skills needed to make lined and interlined curtains, and zipped scatter cushions.
During this course you will learn:
- Health and safety, safe working practice regulations.
- How to assess the suitability of different types of fabrics for different soft furnishing projects.
- How to create and apply a variety of different hand stitches used in curtain and cushion making as well as other soft furnishings.
- How to use a sewing machine for making curtains and cushions.
- How to create mitered corners.
- How to measure windows and how to quantify fabrics needed to make curtains and cushions.
- How to construct a scatter cushion cover.
- How to insert a concealed zip.
Each week you will work towards producing samples demonstrating skills and techniques enabling you to build a portfolio for your own reference and use in your future projects.
This course is designed as an introduction to soft furnishings skills and is suitable for those students who have not yet completed a soft furnishings course before.
You must be aged 19+ and be able to complete a short workbook on a weekly basis with the help of your tutor.
The cost of the course is £80.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if you earn less than £25,000.
You can only complete this course once.
On completion of this course, you may progress onto our Soft Furnishings Improvers course or one of the other Adult Engagement and Progression courses.
Your tutor will advise and discuss the various progression routes available to you. You can also access the College Careers Team to support your progression.
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course's entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
