This non-accredited course runs from St Margaret's Campus every Thursday from 10:00am - 12:30pm for 9 weeks starting on 3 February and finishing on 21 April 2026.
This course is for beginners and those that want to learn the basics. Each week you will be guided through a small sewing project for example, creating your own needle case, piped pin cushion and making a zipper purse.
This is a tutor-led course and is designed to develop the use of the sewing machine and to use the various feet and attachments that come with it.
During this course, you will learn:
- Health and safety, safe working practice regulations
- To identify and understand the functions and workings of the sewing machine, troubleshoot, and identify machine faults
- Understand the different types and sizes of needles
- Understand fabric properties of woven and stretch fabrics and how to successfully sew them
- You will learn how to sew zips and create buttonholes
- Make a cushion cover with an applique
- How to sew reversible projects
- Identify and use an assortment of machine feet.
This course is an introduction to basic sewing skills. Each week, you’ll work on a simple project to improve your sewing and learn how to use a sewing machine with confidence.
This course is designed as an introduction to sewing skills and is suitable for those students who have not yet completed a sewing or garment making course before.
You must be aged 19+ and be able to complete a short workbook on a weekly basis with the help of your tutor.
The cost of the course is £90.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if you earn less than £25,750.
You can only complete this course once.
On completion of this course, you may progress onto our Introduction to Garment Making Course or a Soft Furnishings Course.
Your tutor will advise and discuss the various progression routes available to you. You can also access the Careers Team to support your progression.
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course's entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
