This non-accredited course is delivered at St Margaret's Campus and takes place each Tuesday from 12:30pm to 3:00pm for 9 weeks, starting on 8 September and finishing on 10 November 2026.
This course is designed as an introduction to the skills and techniques required to make new garments or alternations to garments.
You will work on a single project using a simple pattern selected by the tutor.
During this course, you will learn:
- Health and safety, safe working practice regulations
- You will work on a project using a pattern to make a pair of pyjamas or casual trousers/top
- Understanding patterns and pattern markings
- Learning to adjust patterns for a better fit/petite fit
- Learn to sew different types of pockets, sew elastic casings.
- Identify and understand sewing basic seams and hems.
This course is designed as an introduction to the skills required to undertake small and simple garment-making projects. Each week, you will develop your confidence and knowledge in using dressmaking patterns and operating a sewing machine.
This course is designed as an introduction to garment making skills and it is suitable for learners who have not previously completed a garment-making course, but who have completed the Introduction to Sewing Skills course or have basic sewing machine experience.
You should be able to use scissors and sewing equipment safely and work independently throughout the course.
You must be aged 19 or over and be able to complete a short workbook each week with support from your tutor.
The cost of the course is £90.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- Job Seekers Allowance (JSA)
- Employment Support Allowance (ESA - Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if your annual income is less than £26,800.
You can only complete this course once.
On completion of this course, you may progress to Garment Making Improvers 1 or 2, or one of our other Adult Engagement and Progression courses.
Your tutor will discuss the various progression routes available to you and provide advice on your next steps. You can also access support from the College Careers Team to help with your progression.
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course's entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
