This non-accredited course runs from City Skills Centre, each Monday, 12:15pm – 2:45pm for 9 weeks, starting on 2 February and finishing on 20 April 2026.
This is an introductory course for people with limited experience of crafting and upcycling. As you develop there will be a choice of projects to match different abilities. All materials will be provided.
During this course, you will learn:
- How to safely and effectively use tools and equipment used in crafting.
- Ensure health and safety procedures are followed
- How to promote sustainable practices by encouraging the reuse and repurposing of materials
- How to apply basic crafting techniques such as painting, decoupage and stencils
- How to create various craft items with a step by step guide
- How to identify materials suitable for upcycling and understand their environmental impact
- How to upcycle household items to create gifts
- How to create colour palettes
- How to use basic painting techniques
- How to turn your craft into a commercial enterprise.
This is a tutor led course. However, students can choose their own project in week 8 and 9.
This course is designed as an introductory course and no previous skills or experience is required.
You must be aged 19+ and be able to complete a short workbook on a weekly basis with the help of your tutor.
The cost of the course is £90.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if you earn less than £25,750.
You can only complete this course once.
On completion of this course, you may progress onto the Improvers Crafting and Upcycling or one of the other Adult Engagement and Progression courses.
Your tutor will advise and discuss the various progression routes available to you. You can also access the Careers Team to support your progression.
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course's entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
