This non-accredited course is delivered at Abbey Park Campus and takes place each Monday from 4:30pm to 7:00pm for 8 weeks, starting on 21 September and finishing on 16 November 2026.
This is a tutor led beginner's course. You will learn a range of vocabulary and basic grammar to enable you to have short conversations with other British Sign Language (BSL) users.
During this course you will learn:
- Basic Deaf awareness
- Greetings and how to introduce yourself
- Numbers
- How to ask questions
- Days, months and times
- Signs linked to the weather, transport and giving directions
- Basic sentences linked to your everyday life and work
Each week you will develop your understanding of the language and learn new vocabulary to enable you to hold a short, basic conversation in BSL.
This course is designed as an introduction to British Sign Language (BSL) and is suitable for learners with little or no previous experience of BSL.
You must be aged 19 or over and be able to complete a short workbook each week with support from your tutor.
- Annual Tuition fee: £80
The cost of the course is £80.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- Job Seekers Allowance (JSA)
- Employment Support Allowance (ESA - Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if your annual income is less than £26,800.
You can only complete this course once.
On completion of this course, you may progress onto our British Sign Language Improvers 1 course or one of our other Adult Engagement and Progression courses.
Your tutor will discuss the various progression routes available to you and provide advice on your next steps. You can also access support from the College Careers Team to help with your progression.
Apply online via the college website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course's entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
