This non-accredited course runs from Abbey Park Campus, each Monday, 12:30 - 3:00pm for 8 weeks starting on 27 April and finishing on 29 June 2026.
This is a tutor led beginner's course. You will learn a range of vocabulary and basic grammar to enable you to have short conversations with other BSL users.
During this course you will learn:
Basic Deaf awareness
Greetings and how to introduce yourself
Numbers
How to ask questions
Days, months and times
Signs linked to the weather, transport and giving directions
Basic sentences linked to your everyday life and work
Each week you will develop your understanding of the language and learn new vocabulary to enable you to hold a short, basic conversation in BSL.
This course is designed as an introduction to British Sign Language and is suitable for those students who have little or no previous experience of British Sign Language.
You must be aged 19+ and be able to complete a short workbook on a weekly basis with the help of your tutor.
The cost of the course is £80.00.
However, you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if you earn less than £25,750.
You can only complete this course once. On completion of this course, you may progress onto our British Sign Language Improvers course or one of the other Adult Engagement and Progression courses.
Your tutor will advise and discuss the various progression routes available to you. You can also access the college Careers Team to support your progression.
Apply online via the college website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course's entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
