This non-accredited course runs from St Margaret's Campus every Friday 10:00am - 12:30pm for 11 weeks starting on 9 January 2026 and finishing on 27 March 2026.
This course builds upon your existing knowledge, equipping you with additional techniques.
You will work on an individual project using commercial patterns or make your own patterns depending on your experience.
You will be required to bring some of your own materials and sewing equipment to each session.
During this course, you will learn:
- Health and safety, safe working practice regulations
- Use commercial patterns
- Adjust patterns for a better fit
- Understanding different body shapes and proportions
- Applying different types of facings, attaching different types of collars and cuffs
- Adding design details such as different types of pockets.
All of this will be done on small samples which you will keep in a sketch book.
This course is designed for those who have completed Introduction to Garment or Garment Making Improvers 1, and is also suitable for those with prior sewing experience.
You must be aged 19+ and be able to complete a short workbook on a weekly basis with the help of your tutor.
The cost of the course is £110.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if you earn less than £25,750.
You can only complete this course once.
On completion of this course, you may progress onto Garment Making Improvers 3 or one of the other Adult Engagement and Progression courses such as Soft Furnishings or Upholstery.
Your tutor will advise and discuss the various progression routes available to you. You can also access the Careers Team to support your progression.
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course's entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
