This non-accredited course is delivered at St Margaret's Campus and takes place each Tuesday from 12:30 - 3pm for 11 weeks, starting on 17 November and finishing on 9 February 2027.
This course builds upon your existing knowledge, equipping you with additional techniques.
You will work on an individual project using commercial patterns or make your own patterns depending on your experience.
You will be required to bring some of your own materials and sewing equipment to each session.
During this course, you will learn:
Health and safety, safe working practice regulations
Use the commercial pattern of your choice. Read and understand the language and terminology
This term we will be focusing on adjusting the dressmaking patterns for a better fit
Sew the garment following written and verbal instructions
Understanding different body shapes and proportions
Looking at pattern matching and how to use directional print fabric
Develop knowledge of seams and hems
Apply and use different notions such as invisible zips, different types of buttonholes, elastics and interfacings
ALL of this will be done on small samples which you will keep in a sketchbook.
This course is designed for learners who have completed the Introduction to Garment Making Skills course or who have previous sewing experience.
You should be able to use scissors and sewing equipment safely and work independently throughout the course.
You must be aged 19 or over and be able to complete a short workbook each week with support from your tutor.
- Annual Tuition fee: £110
The cost of the course is £110.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- Job Seekers Allowance (JSA)
- Employment Support Allowance (ESA - Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if your annual income is less than £26,800.
You can only complete this course once.
On completion of this course, you may progress to Garment Making Improvers 2, one of our other Adult Engagement and Progression courses, or you may be inspired to enrol on one of our full-time Fashion or Design programmes.
Your tutor will discuss the various progression routes available to you and provide advice on your next steps. You can also access support from the College Careers Team to help with your progression.
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course's entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
