This course takes place at St Margaret's campus every Monday from 1pm to 4pm and runs for 7 weeks
You will learn skills for fashion garment production. The course starts with pattern cutting and moves to garment construction.
You will draft a basic pattern and master key techniques for creating different shapes. Next, you’ll learn intermediate and complex pattern cutting skills. This will improve your garment construction to meet industry standards.
You will explore the tools, equipment, techniques, and products used in pattern cutting and garment construction. As you develop your skills, you’ll create more advanced and personalized work. This course helps you return to education, prepare for further learning or work, and boost your confidence and well-being.
During this course you will learn about pattern cutting and garment construction. Every course focuses on a specific product type, such as Shirts and Tops. You will build your skills based on this focus.
Your learning will include:
- How to draft a basic pattern (block)
- Labelling and instructions
- Equipment used
- Pattern blocks – by type
- Amending and adapting a pattern block
- Material types and suitability
- Standard/body measurements
- Design process through to finished garment
- Introduction to industry-standard manufacturing equipment
- Product construction
- Health and Safety in the workshop
Interest in industry or amateur garment construction, sampling or pattern cutting.
You cannot apply for this course if you have already completed it with the college.
- Material fee: £10
The cost of the course is £75 plus £10 material fees.
However, you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if you earn less than £25,75075 (£10 material fees will be still payable, even if you are on low income or benefits)
The course provides a solid grounding in understanding the basics of pattern cutting and garment construction. This course can lead to further pattern cutting and construction courses for a range of different garments or materials on part-time courses as offered throughout the year by the college.
There are a range of other short courses offered by the college such as laser cutting, printmaking, ceramics, jewellery, and photography which may inspire you to continue studying on a part-time basis.
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study. For enrol and pay courses: Once you have decided to take the course, you need to fill in a short learner details form online and pay the course fee. Once you have done this, you will receive an electronic confirmation of enrolment and payment.
