This non-accredited course is delivered at St Margaret's Campus and takes place each Thursday 1pm to 4pm starting on 14 January and finishing on 4 March 2027.
Our seven session course is an introduction to hand-building with clay, suitable for beginners. You will learn basic techniques such as pinching, coiling, and slab building to create simple ceramic forms. The course also covers surface decoration, glazing, and the firing process. All materials are provided, and no prior experience is needed. This is a relaxed and practical course for anyone interested in learning the basics of working with clay.
During this course, you will learn:
Health and safety and safe working practice regulations in the workshop
Foundational techniques of hand-building with clay, including pinching, coiling, and slab construction.
You’ll explore how to shape and join clay to create simple ceramic forms.
The course also introduces methods for surface decoration and texturing, as well as the basics of glazing and preparing your work for firing.
You will gain an understanding of the ceramic process from start to finish and learn how to use tools and materials safely and effectively in a studio setting. By the end of the course, you will have created your own ceramic pieces using the skills you've learned and developed.
No prior experience necessary. You must be aged 19 or over and be able to complete a short workbook each week with support from your tutor.

- Annual Tuition fee: £100
Annual Tuition fee: £100 and £10 materials fees
The cost of the course is £100.00. However, you will not be required to pay a tuition fee if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- Job Seekers Allowance (JSA)
- Employment Support Allowance (ESA - Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if your annual income is less than £26,800.
Please note the material fee of £10 will still be payable.
You can only complete this course once and on completion of this course, you may progress to our Ceramics - Design and Practice course or one of our other Adult Engagement and Progression courses.
Your tutor will discuss the various progression routes available to you and provide advice on your next steps. You can also access support from the College Careers Team to help with your progression.
