The Pearson T Level Technical Qualification in Science is a two-year Level 3 programme, equivalent in size to three A Levels, It combines classroom-based learning with a minimum 315-hour industry placement, enabling students to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for progression into higher education, apprenticeships or employment within the science sector.
The qualification is structured around a Core Component and an Occupational Specialism. The Core Component provides students with a broad understanding of scientific principles, research methods, data analysis, health and safety, regulation, communication, project management and problem-solving skills. Assessment of the core content consists of two externally assessed examinations and an Employer Set Project (ESP), which requires students to apply their learning to realistic workplace situations.
The qualification places a strong emphasis on employability, practical application of scientific knowledge and employer engagement. Core transferable skills, including communication, teamwork, research, creativity, innovation and reflective evaluation, are embedded throughout the programme.
Successful completion of the technical qualification, occupational specialism and industry placement contributes towards the overall T Level grade, which ranges from Pass to Distinction*. Students can progress to a wide range of science-related degree programmes, higher apprenticeships and technical roles within laboratory, healthcare and food science settings
In the first year, students focus on developing the core knowledge, understanding and transferable skills that underpin a wide range of scientific careers. They learn key scientific concepts and principles, alongside research methods, data collection and analysis, project management, communication, problem solving, creativity, innovation and collaborative working. Students also study health and safety, regulatory requirements and good scientific practice, ensuring they understand how science is applied within real workplace settings.
In Year 2, students study the Laboratory Sciences Occupational Specialism, where they apply the core scientific knowledge gained in Year 1 to practical laboratory contexts. The specialism focuses on developing the technical skills, knowledge and behaviours required to work safely and effectively in laboratory environments. Students learn how to prepare and use scientific equipment, follow laboratory procedures, collect and analyse data, carry out investigations, maintain quality standards, and comply with health and safety and regulatory requirements.
The programme emphasises practical competency and workplace readiness, with students demonstrating their ability to perform laboratory tasks, interpret results, solve problems and communicate findings accurately. Learning is reinforced through the industry placement, allowing students to experience real scientific working environments and apply their skills in practice. The occupational specialism is assessed through a substantial practical assessment that reflects the knowledge and skills required of a laboratory technician.
5 GCSE's at grade 5 and above must include English, maths and combined or triple science.

The Pearson T Level in Science provides a strong progression route to both higher education and employment within the science sector. Students who successfully complete the qualification can progress to university courses such as Biomedical Science, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Food Science, Healthcare Science and related STEM subjects.
The qualification also supports progression to higher and degree apprenticeships, including Laboratory Technician, Science Manufacturing Technician and Food Industry Technologist pathways.

The inclusion of a minimum 315-hour industry placement gives students valuable workplace experience and helps them develop the employability skills required by employers. As a result, students are well prepared to progress into further study, apprenticeships or skilled employment within laboratory, healthcare, food science and wider scientific industries.
