Level 3
The Pearson T Level in Health: Supporting the Care of Children and Young People is a two-year Level 3 qualification, equivalent to three A Levels, designed for students who are passionate about working with children, young people and their families within healthcare settings. The course combines classroom-based learning with a substantial industry placement, enabling students to develop the knowledge, practical skills and professional behaviours needed to support children and young people with a range of healthcare needs. Students gain an understanding of child development, communication, safeguarding, person-centred care, health promotion and professional practice, while learning how to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
Throughout the programme, students develop the skills required to support children and young people before, during and after clinical or therapeutic procedures, while promoting their comfort, wellbeing and emotional needs. They learn the importance of working in partnership with parents, carers and other healthcare professionals to deliver safe, effective and compassionate care
The course combines theory with practical learning opportunities, including industry placement experiences and training within industry-standard simulation wards, allowing students to develop confidence and competence in realistic healthcare environments. Students are encouraged to develop strong communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills whilst gaining valuable insight into paediatric healthcare services.
This qualification provides an excellent foundation for progression into healthcare employment, apprenticeships or higher education, including Children's Nursing, Adult Nursing, Learning Disability Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and other health-related profession
During Year 1, students develop a broad understanding of the healthcare sector and the core knowledge required to work safely and effectively within health and care settings. They learn about health and safety, infection prevention and control, safeguarding, anatomy and physiology, person-centred care, equality, diversity and inclusion, communication and teamwork, and the professional responsibilities of healthcare practitioners.
Students also explore ethical and legal frameworks within healthcare, health promotion, wellbeing, and the use of digital technologies and information management systems in modern healthcare environments. The programme develops students' understanding of how healthcare services support children, young people and their families, while building the communication, empathy and professionalism required when working with individuals of different ages and needs.
Throughout the year, students apply their learning through practical activities, industry placement experiences and opportunities to develop skills within industry-standard simulation wards. This enables them to build confidence, competence and professional behaviours in preparation for the specialist children's healthcare content studied during Year 2.
During Year 2, students develop the specialist knowledge, skills and behaviours required to support children, young people and their families within a variety of healthcare settings. The occupational specialism focuses on three key areas: assisting with clinical tasks and treatments for children and young people, providing care and support before, during and after clinical or therapeutic procedures, and supporting parents, families and carers to meet the needs of children and young people.
Students learn how to deliver safe, compassionate and person-centred care while recognising the physical, emotional and developmental needs of children and young people at different stages of life. They develop an understanding of the importance of family-centred care and effective communication with children, parents and carers. Students also gain experience of working collaboratively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams and learn how to support children and young people through a range of healthcare interventions and treatments.
Through industry placements and practical learning opportunities within industry-standard simulation wards, students apply their knowledge in realistic healthcare scenarios, developing the confidence, professionalism and clinical skills required for progression into healthcare employment, apprenticeships or higher education, including Children's Nursing and other health-related professions
