Midwives stand the test of time. They are with mothers from the earliest days, through birth, and as they adjust to their new lives. Midwives have supported women during their most exciting and terrifying moments for years, decades, and even centuries.
By taking the health and science T Level with a midwifery focus, you join a caring community. This programme, created by practicing midwives, prepares you for a hands-on role in healthcare. The two-year course supports the midwifery team and equips you with essential skills.
By the end of your journey, you will confidently step into any birthing room, antenatal class, or home birth. You’ll be ready to support mothers, babies, and midwives with grace.
You step into your first year, ready to master important health and science concepts. You'll learn key principles and regulations needed for any healthcare role. Get ready for managing information, health and safety guidelines, and good clinical practice.
With the basics covered, the year takes you on a healthcare journey. You’ll explore:
- Real-world infection prevention and control
- Person-centred care, health, and wellbeing
- Human anatomy and physiology
- Diseases and disorders
By the end of the year, you'll dive into the various roles and career paths in healthcare. You’ll also consider the different employers and organisations you could work for.
In year two, the fun begins. You’ll build a solid understanding of pregnancy stages and key clinical tasks. This way, mum feels safe and supported.
You’ll explore roles in the midwife team and see how everyone cares for babies, mothers, and supporting parents throughout pregnancy—antenatal, perinatal, and postnatal.
Part of your new experience is the birthing environment. You’ll work with precious newborns, observing and taking measurements.
You’ll focus on these outcomes:
- Assisting the midwifery team with clinical tasks and learning about pregnancy stages and team roles. You’ll explore clinical interventions for maternity support and the birthing environment.
- Helping the midwife care for mothers and supporting parents at all stages, from antenatal to postnatal.
- Caring for newborns by conducting observations and measurements.
During your 45-day placement, your confidence in supporting the midwifery team will grow. You’ll also dive into your employer-set project. This is your chance to shine, using your classroom knowledge in the real midwifery world.
If you need help with English, maths, or digital skills, we have tutors to support you. They’ll help you achieve the level 2 in English and maths you need to complete the course.
To be accepted onto the Health and Science T Level, you must be aged 16–18 on 31 August in the year you start the course and have five GCSEs at grade 4 or higher, including maths, English, and double science.
- Material fee: £30
- Annual Tuition fee: £0
There are no tuition fees for T Level courses if you start before 19.
To work with children and vulnerable adults, you must get an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This check costs £44.
This is a professional programme, so all students must wear a uniform. T Level health and science students will wear a uniform in college and during placements. The uniform has a pathways medical tunic, which you can buy from the college for £17.99*. You also need black trousers (no leggings) and black shoes. If you receive our learner support fund, the college will pay for and provide your uniform.
For more details on uniform requirements, contact the workplace coordinator or program lead.
*Prices are correct as of December 2025 but may change.
Your T-level in healthcare and science is the start of an exciting, rewarding vocation. From here, you can step into a midwife team in a supporting role or move into a higher-level apprenticeship or a degree. More than a career, midwifery is a beautiful way of life.
Our independent careers advisors have all the information, advice, and guidance you need, and they’re always available for a natter if you need help planning your way forward.
Apply online via the College website. You will need details of your qualifications to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to an interview at the College to meet key staff, learn more about your chosen course of study, and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
