Level 3
The Pearson T Level in Health: Supporting the Midwifery Team is a two-year Level 3 qualification, equivalent to three A Levels, designed for students who are passionate about supporting women, babies and families throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. The course combines classroom-based learning with a substantial industry placement, providing students with valuable experience of working within healthcare environments. Students develop a strong understanding of maternity care, woman-centred care, communication, safeguarding, health promotion and professional practice within the healthcare sector. They gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to support midwives and the wider multidisciplinary team while contributing to the delivery of safe, compassionate and high-quality care. Through practical learning opportunities, including work within industry-standard simulation facilities and clinical environments, students build confidence in supporting mothers and newborn babies. The qualification provides an excellent foundation for progression into healthcare employment, apprenticeships or higher education, including Midwifery, Nursing and other health-related degree programmes
During Year 1, students develop a broad foundation of knowledge and skills that underpin maternity and healthcare practice. They learn about the healthcare sector, health and safety, infection prevention and control, safeguarding, anatomy and physiology, person-centred care, equality, diversity and inclusion, communication and teamwork, and the ethical and legal responsibilities of healthcare professionals. Students also explore health promotion, digital healthcare technologies and the management of information within healthcare settings. In addition, they begin to develop an understanding of woman-centred care, the role of the midwifery team and the importance of supporting women, babies and families throughout the maternity journey. Through classroom learning, industry placement experiences and practical activities within industry-standard simulation environments, students build the knowledge, confidence and professional behaviours required to progress to the specialist midwifery content studied in Year 2.
In Year 2, students develop the specialist knowledge, skills and behaviours required to support midwives and the wider multidisciplinary team across maternity services. They learn how to assist with clinical tasks during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods, while promoting safe, compassionate and woman-centred care. Students develop an understanding of pregnancy, labour and birth, and learn how to support mothers and families throughout their maternity journey. They also gain knowledge of newborn care, including undertaking observations and measurements, supporting infant feeding, and promoting the health and wellbeing of both mother and baby. Throughout the year, students develop their practical skills through industry placements and enhanced learning within industry-standard simulation wards, where they can practise clinical procedures and respond to realistic maternity scenarios. The course prepares students to work effectively within maternity services and provides a strong foundation for progression into healthcare employment, apprenticeships or higher education in Midwifery, Nursing and related healthcare professions.

Successful completion provides students with a variety of progression opportunities into higher education, apprenticeships and employment within the healthcare sector. The qualification develops the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required to support maternity services and provides a strong foundation for future healthcare careers.
Students may progress into healthcare support roles such as a Maternity Support Worker (MSW) or other healthcare support positions within NHS trusts, community healthcare services and private healthcare providers. The qualification is aligned to healthcare support occupations and can also support progression into healthcare apprenticeships.
For students wishing to continue their studies, progression routes include Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs), Level 4 and 5 healthcare programmes, Nursing Associate pathways, and a range of healthcare-related apprenticeships. Many students choose to progress to university degree programmes such as Midwifery, Adult Nursing, Children’s Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Paramedic Science, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and other allied health professions.
The combination of academic study, practical learning in industry-standard simulation wards and a minimum of 315 hours of industry placement ensures students develop the clinical knowledge, communication skills and professionalism required for progression into further study or employment. This T Level provides an excellent pathway for students aspiring to build a rewarding career supporting women, babies and families or within the wider healthcare sector.
