The Supporting the Adult Nursing Team occupational specialism equips students with the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours needed to work effectively in a range of adult healthcare settings. Students develop an understanding of person-centred care and learn how to support registered nurses and other healthcare professionals in delivering safe, compassionate and high-quality care. The course includes developing practical skills in clinical care, supporting individuals with activities of daily living, promoting dignity and independence, monitoring wellbeing, and assisting with skin integrity assessments and care. Through a combination of classroom learning and industry placement experience, students gain the confidence, competence and employability skills required to progress into healthcare support roles, apprenticeships or higher education pathways within nursing and the wider health sector
Students develop a broad understanding of the healthcare sector and the principles that underpin safe, effective and compassionate care. They gain knowledge of health and safety requirements, infection prevention and control, safeguarding, and the professional responsibilities expected within healthcare settings. The programme enables students to develop an understanding of anatomy and physiology and the importance of applying this knowledge when supporting individuals with a range of healthcare needs. Students also learn about person-centred care, equality, diversity and inclusion, helping them to provide respectful and responsive support to people from diverse backgrounds. In addition, they develop effective communication and teamwork skills, explore the ethical and legal frameworks that guide healthcare practice, and learn how to promote health and wellbeing. The course further develops students' understanding of digital technologies, record keeping and the secure management of information and data within modern healthcare environments.
In Year 2, students build on their core healthcare knowledge and further develop the practical skills required to support registered nurses in a range of adult healthcare settings. The focus is on applying knowledge within realistic clinical situations and demonstrating competence in supporting individuals with a variety of health and care needs. Students learn how to assist the adult nursing team with clinical tasks, support individuals with activities of daily living, promote comfort, dignity and independence, and contribute to maintaining health and wellbeing. They also develop skills in recognising and responding to skin integrity concerns, supporting care and treatment plans, and working effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Students have the opportunity to enhance their practical learning by working within our industry-standard simulation wards, where they can develop and practise clinical skills in a realistic healthcare environment before applying them in the workplace. Alongside classroom learning, students continue to gain valuable experience through industry placements, enabling them to consolidate their knowledge, develop professional behaviours and prepare for progression into healthcare employment, apprenticeships or higher education, including nursing-related pathways.

Successful completion provides students with a range of progression opportunities within the healthcare sector. The qualification is aligned with healthcare support occupations and enables students to progress directly into employment as a Healthcare Support Worker or Senior Healthcare Support Worker, working under the supervision of registered healthcare professionals.
Students may also choose to continue their studies through a healthcare apprenticeship, including Senior Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeships, or progress to higher-level qualifications such as a Nursing Associate programme or Assistant Practitioner pathway. Those wishing to pursue a registered healthcare profession can progress to higher education, including university degrees in Adult Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Paramedic Science and other allied health professions.
The combination of classroom-based learning, industry placement experience and practical training within industry-standard simulation wards helps students develop the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required for further study and employment. The qualification provides a strong foundation for career progression within the NHS, private healthcare providers, community healthcare services and the wider health and social care sector.
Apply online via the College website. You will need details of your qualifications to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to an interview at the College to meet key staff, learn more about your chosen course of study, and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
