The Supported Internship course is designed to support young people with disabilities to successfully transition into sustained, meaningful employment. Through a structured, partnership-based approach, underpinned by strong collaboration between the college, employers, and families, with a named college contact available throughout the internship to ensure consistency and continuity of support.

The programme offers learners the opportunity to engage in real work environments for approximately two days per week (12 hours), across a range of vocational sectors including warehousing, retail, hospitality and catering, administration, IT, and cleaning and maintenance. This ensures that learners gain practical, hands-on experience aligned with their interests and career aspirations.

The time spent in the workplace will provide you with the opportunity to learn essential job specific skills within a variety of workplaces. The key intent is to provide personalised support through trained job coaches, who work closely with both the learner and employer. This includes on-the-job training, guidance, and the gradual development of independence within the workplace.

Employers are also supported through optional disability awareness training and advice on making reasonable adjustments, ensuring an inclusive and supportive working environment. You will further develop your soft skills, which are important for success. One day a week is spent on campus completing functional skills.

The functional skills content is closely linked to employment such as updating C.V's, writing covering letters, job searching, practising interview skills or learning about payslips and bank accounts. With an opportunity to bridge gaps in learning. You will have access to a Learning Coach to discuss additional support and development needs.

This is a 1 year course.

There are no formal entry requirements but it is essential that your goal is to gain paid employment. To be able to travel independently and a commitment to work to the best of your ability.

The main purpose of the Supported Internship is to support you in gaining paid employment. Throughout the course, the focus will be on developing your work skills, building your confidence and independence, and gaining valuable experience in the workplace.
You will be supported to develop the skills and knowledge you need to help you move towards your employment goals and prepare for the world of work.
