This course is for students who want to build their confidence in maths, starting with the basics and moving on to more challenging topics. You will learn at your own pace, beginning with content aimed at GCSE grades 1 to 3. As you improve, you will tackle more problem-solving questions at grades 4 to 5 to prepare for the Foundation tier exam. If you are ready, you can then move on to higher level topics (grades 6 to 9) to prepare for the higher tier exam.
The GCSE mathematics course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of concepts and techniques to provide a foundation of mathematical skills for further study. Through studying this course, you will become more confident in applying maths skills to solve problems and you will develop an understanding of the importance of maths in everyday life.
The subject content includes numbers, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics as well as ratios.
You don’t need to have any previous qualifications, but you will be at an advantage if you have a grade 3 (D) at GCSE in maths or level 2 functional skills maths. If English is your second language, we recommend you have an IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

This qualification could be used to support your progress into further education and/or employment. Many employers require employees to have a grade 4 or above in mathematics. Achieving a GCSE maths level 4 or higher (grade C or higher) will increase your opportunities to apply for a range of jobs and further courses. GCSE maths level 4 or higher is increasingly becoming a requirement for many higher level courses, such as teaching, nursing, social work, sciences and engineering.

You will be contacted to come into College for an assessment and based on the assessment you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course or you may be directed to do the functional skills maths. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.
