Our IMI Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance Repair is suitable for individuals who wish to develop essential knowledge and skills required to become a technician in the automotive maintenance and repair industry.
Theoretical elements of the course are delivered in modern, well-equipped classrooms, whilst practical elements are based in state of the art, industry standard workshops and laboratories.
We incorporate a wide range of trips and visits into the course, including the opportunity to complete Industry Placements in Spain and Portugal. The course is delivered over a 32-week period.
This course is comprised of 10 core units: Automotive Job Roles, Health Safety, Light Vehicle Chassis Systems, Engineering Materials Fabrication, Engine Mechanical, Cooling Lubrication systems, Engine Fuel, Ignition Exhaust systems, Tools Measuring Devices, Electrical Systems, Servicing Maintenance, and Transmission Systems.
Alongside the vocational element of the programme, you will undertake a Personal Social Development (PSD) programme which aims to develop communication teamwork, and equip you with range of transferable skills, including how to keep yourself safe, and how to contribute to society and your local community.
Direct entry to this course requires GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4 or above (or Functional Skills Level 2), plus two other GCSEs at grade 4 or above including a science or technical based subject. It is also desirable that you can demonstrate a minimum 90% attendance record in your previous education or employment. A suitable Level 1 qualification or relevant industry experience is desirable but not essential.
Internally progressing students will need to have successfully completed a relevant vocational level 1 qualification and achieved GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4 or above (or Functional skills Level 2). Students will also be required to demonstrate a minimum 90% attendance record and gain an acceptable reference from their previous Programme Lead Tutor.
Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who hold both English and maths Functional Skills qualifications at level 2.

You are expected to obtain personal protective equipment (PPE) to be worn during all practical sessions. During the Induction period, you will be allocated a locker to store your PPE. Basic requirements are steel toe cap safety boots, and plain navy or black overalls (boiler suit style only). You can purchase your PPE from wherever you wish, however during enrolment you will be given details of some local companies who supply many of our students. The cost of the required PPE would be expected to cost between £30 and £45.
You will require some basic stationary (pens, pencils, ruler, ring binder, page dividers). You will be given a course Equipment List during enrolment, detailing specifics.
This qualification could allow an individual to progress onto an apprenticeship or a higher level of learning and training. Students may wish to progress onto one of our level 3 engineering programmes. This may include our IMI Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or our range of T-Level provision.

You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event/Interview at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you. All students will undertake a probationary period for the first six weeks of their programme. During this time, attendance, attitude, attainment and application towards study will be monitored. A final decision as to the most appropriate level and outcome will be discussed with you towards the end of your probationary period.
