Exploring a broad and engaging curriculum in health and social care, this course will widen your knowledge about this sector. Through hands-on work and a work placement, you will develop both practical and investigative skills to support your studies. The qualification is particularly suited to learners who have the relevant interest and capability to progress in this sector as the course aims to inspire and enthuse you by strengthening your ability to work with others, improve your problem-solving skills, develop your independent study, personal learning and thinking skills; all of which are essential skills and attributes prized by employers. A work placement in a health care setting is required as part of this course providing you with a wider understanding and practical skills required for success in employment in the caring services as well as further study at level 3. If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career. If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities. For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.
Units of study cover a wide variety of topics that prepare you for work or further study in the health and social care sector. Topics for study include Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care, Communication in Health and Social Care, Working in Health and Social Care. The programme will also help you to develop skills that are essential for the modern-day workplace including team working, working to deadlines, and presenting information effectively. If you have not yet achieved your English and maths at GCSE grade C/4 or equivalent, then you will also be timetabled to study English and maths classes too.
Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 3 (D) or above and one further GCSE at grade 3(D) or above is required.
This course is assessed through a variety of methods and is continuous throughout the year. There are five mandatory units and two optional units that will need to be completed and passed to be successful on this course. All units are internally assessed units where evidence for assessment can be generated through a range of activities, including assignments, role-play, practical performance and verbal presentations. If you are re-taking math and English with us, these assessments are externally examined.

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
