This accredited course is delivered at St Margaret's Campus, each Monday, from 9:30am to 3:00pm for 20 weeks, starting on 28 September 2026 and finishing on 19 April 2027.
On successful completion of the course, you will achieve a recognised national qualification.
This is a tutor-led course that combines practical workshop activities with underpinning theory. You will work towards building an assessed portfolio alongside completing your upholstery project.
You will be required to bring some of your own materials to each session.
You will also need to have a sprung armchair, or a sprung winged chair to upholster during the course.
During this course, you will complete the following units:
- Materials in Furniture Making and Furnishings
- Tools Equipment
- Materials in Furniture Making and Furnishings
- Preparation and Finishing Methods in Furniture Making
- Upholstery and Soft Furnishing Methods
- Finishing Methods In Upholstery And Soft Furnishings
- Sustainability in the Timber Trade
Each week you will further develop these skills and guided by your tutor you will apply these to your chosen piece of furniture.
This course is designed to support those who have completed a non-accredited upholstery course or who already have some prior knowledge and experience of upholstery.
You should have some basic digital skills and we also recommend a level of English that will enable you to work comfortably at Level 1.
You will need to be able to participate in hands-on, physical work using tools and materials that require a reasonable level of physical strength and mobility.
You must be aged 19 or over and be able to complete a short workbook each week with support from your tutor.
The cost of the course is £400.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- Job Seekers Allowance (JSA)
- Employment Support Allowance (ESA - Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if your annual income is less than £26,800.
During this course, you will explore a range of opportunities to move into employment or self-employment within the industry.
Your tutor will discuss the various progression routes available to you and provide advice on your next steps. You can also access support from the College Careers team to help with your progression.
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course's entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
