Course Overview

This non-accredited course runs from St Margaret’s Campus, each Monday, 12:30 – 3:00 for 13 weeks, starting on 9 September and finishing on 9 December 2024.

This course builds upon your existing knowledge, equipping you with advanced techniques to tackle upholstery projects.

You may be required to bring some of your own materials to each session. You will also need to have a set of dining chairs, an armchair or a winged chair to upholster.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

During this course, you will learn how to:

– Understand health and safety, safe working practice regulations
– Safely disassemble furniture
– Remove old fabric and padding
– Install new webbing and foam
– Measure, cut and secure fabric
– Use techniques to create finishing trims

Each week will develop these skills and guided by your tutor you will apply these to your chosen piece of furniture.

Entry Requirements

This course is designed to support those interested in progressing onto accredited learning and/or future employment or self-employment within this industry. It is suitable for those that have completed our Introduction to Upholstery Beginners 1 2 Courses or have some previous upholstery experience.

You must be aged 19+ and be able to complete a short workbook on a weekly basis with the help of your tutor.

How you will be assessed

There are no formal assessments, exams or coursework. Your tutor will informally assess your progress each week.    

You will receive a certificate of course completion based on your progress in class and attendance.

Tuition fees

Tuition Fees (19+): £90.00

Additional Costs

The cost of the course is £130.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:

– Universal Credit
– JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)

There will be no fees if you earn less than £25,000.

Course and Career progression

You can only complete this course once.

On completion of this course, you may progress onto our Upholstery Improvers 2 course or one of the other Adult Engagement and Progression courses. Your tutor will advise and discuss the various progression routes available to you. You can also access the College Careers Team to support your progression.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course’s entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
