Course Overview

If your career ambition is to work within the police, fire or ambulance service or even the Navy, Royal Air Force or Army, this is the course for you.

This uniformed protective services course provides a positive step into industry-related employment or gives scope for further progression into higher education (it is the equivalent of 1.5 A levels). During your studies you will also have the opportunity to join the police or army cadets, helping to broaden your experience and skillset for future employment.

If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above.
You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.

If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities.
For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

This is a one-year foundation diploma intended to provide you with the essential knowledge and practical skills required for work in the public service sector.

You will study up to 5 units covering a diverse range of material including; leadership and teamwork, outdoor and adventurous activities, expedition skills and physical preparation for entry into the public services. The units have been developed to assess personal learning and thinking skills across the qualification and prepare you for a career in any of the Uniformed Protective Services.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English at grade 4 (C) or above is required, as well a four GCSE subjects at grade 4 (C) or above.

Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 (C) or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

How you will be assessed

The main assessment for this course is through ongoing coursework, such as written essays, presentations, verbal interviews and practical assessment. There will also be an exam-based unit for each year of study.

Additional Costs

There are currently £60 of material fees that covers all costs involved in trips and visits, including expeditions throughout the year.

This is a uniform course and uniform is ordered direct from the supplier at a total cost of approx £140.00 payable direct to the supplier.

Course and Career progression

Upon successful completion, learners can progress on to the level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services. Learners may choose to progress into Higher Education or employment within the public service sector, for example, Police, Fire Service, Probation service, Prison service or Military services, such as the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
