Course Overview
If you are fascinated by tourism and travel, seeing different places and meeting new people, this course is a great insight into the industry.
You will develop your general understanding of the tourism sector, alongside building the practical skills required for a range of career paths.
Our lecturers have diverse experience of working within these areas and can offer high levels of expertise and knowledge of the content, as well as being able to help you progress towards your goals in long-term employment.
In addition, this course offers strong links and opportunities with desirable employers such as British Airways, Swissport, Barrhead Travel and Jet2. This qualification is equivalent to an A-level and is widely recognised by industry and universities.
If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above.
You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.
If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities.
For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.
What You'll Learn
Year 1
You will study a variety of core units across all areas of tourism and travel, including:
1. Principles of marketing for travel and tourism
2. Conference and events
3. Work Placement in travel and tourism
4. Development of tour operators products and services
5. Promotions and sales in travel and tourism
6. Planning and delivering guided tours
7. Developing an entertainment programme
8. Overseas resort operations
9. GCSE English or maths
Entry Requirements
Entry to this course requires one reference, 95% attendance at your last place of work or study, and 5 GCSEs including English and maths at grade 4 or above.
A level 2 diploma in Travel and Tourism is also desirable but not essential.

You will be assessed through a combination of assignments, live projects, presentations, and displays.

Course and Career progression
Upon completion of this course, you can progress onto the Travel and Tourism Extended Diploma. If you have achieved distinction level and are aged 18+ then you may also choose to apply for the Tourism and Events Management Foundation Degree at Leicester College.
Alternatively, you might decide to pursue a career in this industry. We have a very successful progression into employment with former students working for Swissport, Premier Inn and Jet2 Airlines.
What Happens Next
Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
